International Education Week - November 16 - 20, 2009

Creating a Vision for a Better Future

This year marks the 10 annual national celebration of International Education Week. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of a continuing promotion of programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

In a statement issued by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, this year's theme, "Creating a Vision for a Better Future", emphasizes the key role that international education plays in ensuring a more secure and prosperous future for all. He continues, "Our graduates should be global citizens prepared to work on solving challenges that transcend borders, and they should be able to work well with people from diverse backgrounds, whether it is an individual who is a recent immigrant to the United States living in the community, or a business client or colleague located halfway around the world."

In support of this initiative the Governor of the State of Arizona issued a proclamation, "...I, Janice K. Brewer, Governor of the State of Arizona, do hereby proclaim November 16-20, 2009 as *International Education Week* and encourage the citizens and institutions in Arizona to participate in celebrating the week and to recognize the importance of international education in our lives."
